  • What is Spray Foam Insulation and How Does It Work?

Spray Foam Insulation is a liquid applied poly urethane. Two parts are heated combined and sprayed as a liquid under pressure that expands and solidifies in place.

Providing a complete air seal and superior insulation. Understanding the Types of Spray Foam Insulation: Open Cell vs. Closed Cell Spray foam insulation comes in two primary forms: Open Cell and Closed Cell.

    • Open Cell Spray Foam: This type features interconnected air pockets, which are not individually sealed. Its advantages include a greater expansion capacity, making it ideal for filling large gaps and reaching difficult areas. It’s also more cost-effective saving up to 30% over closed cell foam. However, it has a lower R-Value per inch, does not act as a vapor barrier, and lacks the rigidity of Closed Cell foam.
    • Closed Cell Spray Foam: Recognized for its robust properties, Closed Cell foam at one inch thickness acts as a complete moisture barrier and air seal. With a two-inch application, it can increase wall rack strength by 300% and provides an R-14 insulation value that maintains its efficiency in real-world conditions, outperforming many other insulation types. This variant is versatile enough to be used under concrete or outside concrete foundations, serving both as insulation and a moisture barrier.
  • What makes Spray Foam Done Right better that the rest?

Air Tight By Done Right means places that can’t be sprayed like around windows, doors and the cracks between double studs and plates in the framing are sealed with can foam or caulked. Before we start spraying we take the time to mask, doors windows, fixtures, outlets etc. and cover floors. Then set up our custom designed ventilation system that filters the air-born liquid particles (That stay liquid until they find something to stick to) out of the exhaust air. Then when finished we make it ready for drywall clean and remove all of the mess.

Embrace Efficiency with ‘Air Tight, Done Right’ Insulation By implementing an ‘Air Tight, Done Right’ approach with SPF, you ensure that your home is thoroughly sealed and insulated. This level of efficiency means a smaller HVAC system can be more than sufficient. In a properly air-sealed and insulated house, you might need as little as one ton of cooling capacity for every 1,500 to 2,500 square feet of living space. This contrasts sharply with traditionally insulated homes, which often require larger, more costly systems.

Avoid Oversized HVAC Systems and Maintain Ideal Humidity An oversized HVAC system in a well-insulated home can lead to issues, such as inadequate moisture removal from the air – a common consequence of the system not running long enough. This is a critical consideration because moisture control is vital for comfort and air quality.

Incorporating Fresh Air Systems for Optimal Indoor Air Quality To maintain optimal indoor air quality in an airtight home, integrating a fresh air system, like the Broan fresh air system or similar models, is recommended. This ensures a continuous supply of fresh air, balancing the highly efficient insulation provided by SPF.

  • What do I need to think about in advance?

We need roof sheeting all the way down to the walls over the entire living area. Where covered porches tie in the sheeting is not needed for a vented attic and is often left out. Vented soffits are ok but they do not need to be vented. We block off between the top of the wall and roof deck and put foam there. Also for the framers we don’t want the ridge vented or gable vents.

Do plan for vented bathroom exhaust fan and a vented range hood is a good idea. These  should be run during cooking and bathing to reduce moister in the home.

Then talk to your HVAC provider and let them know that we are going air tight and they don’t need to up size the the AC system as is commonly done with conventional insulation. An air tight building will cool off much quicker and cause an oversized system to short cycle and not have enough time to dehumidify the air. With Spray Foam Insulation and everything else sealed up you may need as little as one ton of AC for 1500 square feet of living space.

There are fresh air systems like Braun makes to bring in fresh air when heating and cooling that can be added.
